The Old Widow and Widower

The old widow asks herself,
"Who will cut and stack my wood in cords
As I make the stew?"
And the old widower asks,
"Who will make my stew
As I cut and stack the wood in cords?"
And they both answer,
"I will do it myself."

The old widow asks herself,
"Who will lie beside me at night
And comfort me with their sleep-sounds?"
And the old widower asks,
"Who will rest their leg against my body
And ease me when my sleep is troubled?"
And they both answer,
"Nobody."
