Try to Stay Well-Hidden in the Leaves

In the morning, the rabbits are hiding back where we grow squash, and my dog flushes them through the fence. The hawks circle, and minks are down in the woods. At twilight, I see a rabbit back among the squash leaves. He watches me but stays in a ball.

I tell him, "This isn't a safe place." When I look around, I see the road, the woods full of owls, the houses each with a dog. Some have cats. I say, "This world was not created with the idea of kindness, was it?"

When I look back, he is gone.
